Skimping out on sleep? Here's What Your Missin'

October 19, 2018

Sleep...such an underrated activity in our day and age. I was flabbergasted though when I started doing some digging on the importance of sleep and found many doctors saying that

SLEEP IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN DIET AND EXERCISE COMBINED!!

This is huge, you could be doing cross-fit 5 days a week, sip'in on green juice daily and eatin' only sprouted grains but if you ain’t getting enough z's then your health is going to be greatly impaired!

So, let's dive into why our netflix addiction to Gossip Girl could be worse than we thought!!

#1- Detoxification-

When you are busy dreaming about beach sunsets and galaxies far away your body is doing some pretty cool stuff like detoxifying your organs, repairing muscles, healing your heart and blood vessels, synthesizing hormones and all this other good stuff.

If you skimp out on sleep, or are not sleeping doing the prime window for detoxification which is 10-2, then your body is going to get backlogged with toxins, muscles won't be repaired, your heart will be stressed, and kidneys will not be filtered which gives rise to chronic disease whether that be heart disease, diabetes, stroke, obesity, kidney disease etc.

If you want to be healthy, fit lean and green then put that juice down and go get in bed!!! Preferable before 10 pm ;)

#2- Brain Function and Emotional Sanity-

Ever have an awful night's rest and the next day you wake up and all the sudden can’t figure out how to unscrew the toothpaste lid or you forget that you have a step going from the living room to the kitchen and stub your toe?

We have all felt the negative effects of brain fog and fatigue from not sleeping but besides feeling “out of it” there are other more serious affects.

See our brain needs time to chill, like hard core chill and the perfect time to do it is when it's not busy trying to keep us alive during the day and are sound asleep in our bed. When we fall into this sleep the brain finally has time to vacuum up all the waste products like molecular detritus ( a toxic protein that can lead to dementia), shuffles through the important memories of the day and keeps those that are important, and solidifies what you learned that day.

#3-Energy-

Let’s be real, if you go to bed at 3 you are not waking up energized at 6 for that morning run. It just ain’t happening. A lack of sleep can get in the way of your fitness and health goals cause without the needed hours of sleep we are going to feel fatigued and drained which means that our but is staying in bed instead of doing that Hot Buti Yoga class.

For something that we all seem to love so much, many of us are chronically deficient in our sleep. Setting a schedule for sleeping is just as important as meal prep or planning out your gym classes for the week so make sure you plan and schedule your sleep time in!

Don’t skimp out on your sleep, I promise it's important and you will feel so much better when you are well rested :)

The thing that I love to do is go technology free an hour before bed time. This prevents my melatonin from being affecting by blue light and get's me in-tune with how sleepy I actually am, which is usually pretty sleepy :)

So the 3 day sleep challenge was created.

For 3 days we are going to schedule our sleep time in the morning and plan our day accordingly, listen to a guided meditation at night to fall into a deep sleep and wake up to a quick 3-5 minute journal exercise to set your day right.

Your sleep is important, do this challenge with me!!
